Ray's Ramblings - October 9th, 2017

Ray Flowers talks some playoff baseball before mentioning Avisail Garcia and Justin Turner.

Jose Altuve has three homers, four RBI and five runs scored in the ALDS. He’s good.

Trevor Bauer is set to start Game 4 against the Yankees. He’s 3-0 with a 0.92 ERA against them this season (playoffs included).

Greg Bird hit a homer off Andrew Miller to win the game 1-0 for the Yankees. Miller had previously allowed three hits in 27 at-bats against lefties in the postseason.

Xander Bogaerts broke an 0-for-14 stretch with a hit in his first at-bat Monday.

Rafael Devers is the 6th player in baseball history to have a homer before turning 21 years of age. The list is an impressive one: Andrew Jones, Miguel Cabrera, Manny Machado, Bryce Harper and Mikey Mantle.

Edwin Encarnacion (ankle) is still on crutches. The team continues to hold out hope that he will return this series, but it’s hard to see it happening given the injury, and the crutches (and walking boot).

Yuli Gurriel has four hits thus far but no runs or no runs batted in. That has rarely happened in playoff history only 10 other times.

Aaron Judge has 10 at-bats in the ALDS and he’s yet to produce a hit. He’s also struck out eight times. He’s a total mess right now. Despite the continued love fest in every corner of the universe for Judge, the guy still has major holes, including a staggering inability to put the ball in play consistently.

Clayton Kershaw has a 4.63 ERA in 19 playoff appearances. That’s the worst in history for a guy who has made 12 starts in the postseason. There’s an obvious reason for his struggles the seventh inning. Kershaw has a 3.08 ERA over the first six innings in his playoff career. However, in the 7th inning the number is a massive 25.50 (17 earned runs in just six innings).

Brad Peacock allowed three runs over just 2.2 innings in his start in Game 3 against the Red Sox.

David Price has worked 6.2 innings in two outings for the Sox without allowing a run. He’s struck out six while walking two, and honestly, he’s looked really good.

Max Scherzer (hamstring) is good to go and says he is ready to throw 100 pitches in Game 3 for the Nationals.

Masahiro Tanaka allowed three hits over seven shutout innings. He looked fantastic. He was opposed by Carlos Carrasco who allowed three hits and three walks over 5.2 innings.

Games 1-3 of the Red Sox / Astros series were each decided by at least five runs. That had never happened before.

When a best of five series is tied 1-1, the winner of Game 3 wins the series 75 percent of the time (36-of-48).

There have been 52 Divisional Series at 2-0 since 1995. Only nine of the 52 have gone to Game 5.

This cannot be real. Can it?

Avisail Garcia just fell to the 17th round in a 15-team, mixed league mock draft I’m doing (I will write it up when it’s completed). Clearly, no one is believing his breakout was real, but when was the last time a .330-18-80-75 player got less respect? He will be an interesting player to break down next preseason.

I can’t tell which of these costumes I would rather wear?

Justin Turner has averaged 24 homers, 81 RBI and 76 runs the last two seasons. He hit .322 in 2017 though it was a tremendously front-loaded effort as he hit .377 in the first half and just .266 in the second.
