 NBA All-Star Slate
Posted by Benny Ricciardi on Friday, February 17, 2017 - 15:56

So I am sure you fellow degenerates are going to play this slate anyway, so there is no need for any of us (myself included) to listen to Tommy telling us not to. He is absolutely right that we shouldn’t be doing this, but you guys do not strike me as the kind of people who are going to listen, so I figured I want as well give you the best edge you can get if you are going to do it anyway. There are no real stats to crunch or pace numbers to look at here, but let me lay out a few situations for you and some players who might benefit from them.

Rookie Game

The Rookie Game is interesting, because each team only has 10 players as opposed to twelve. That means each player should be in line for a few more minutes since everyone should play about the same, with a few studs seeing a little more. That means a $3K punt in the Rookie game is probably better than a $3K punt in the All-Star game and a $10K player in the Rookie Game is better than a $10K player in the All-Star game.

 Jefe's NBA Rundown - 2/16

As always, the rundown is designed to give you an opinion on some different players or situations in the slate today. You need to be reacting to news throughout the day. Always keep an eye on Twitter for the most up-to-date information. The idea is not that you use ONLY players from this article to build your lineups, but rather all of our content from Benny’s article, to our cheat sheets and videos along with our projections algorithm and optimizer. If you’re trying to only use players under the “cash” section to build your cash lineups for instance, you’re going to have a hard time. Instead, use some of those players as building blocks and fill in around them.

Obviously not much to cover tonight, but I thought I’d give you a quick idea of how I’m approaching the slate. I don’t think I’ve done this once all year, but I decided to build out 150 lineups tonight and I threw them in the $4 Shot on FanDuel (also some of them in the $12 Q). I’ll list anyone that’s in more than 50% of my lineups in “Main Targets,” most of the other guys that I used under “Others to Consider” and then anyone around 10% owned or less I’ll put under “Differentiators” just so that you guys can see my level of interest and every player that I think is in play. Of course, my lineups could change with any breaking news or random late research that I stumble upon, but you’ll have a really good idea of my approach.

Washington Wizards @ Indiana Pacers

Vegas: Wizards -2.5, O/U: 217

Wizards: 13th Pace, 7th Scoring, 13th fewest points allowed

Pacers: 14th Pace, 15th scoring, 10th most points allowed

John Wall - Since the start of the month, Wall has averaged 39 minutes per game and over 51 fantasy points. He is priced in the $10K range, which makes him a solid cash game guy on this slate with a high floor. The up-tempo pace has done wonders for opposing point men this season and Wall has already averaged over 50 in his three games against the Pacers this season.

Markieff Morris - These two teams played last Friday and Markieff dropped a huge 26 point and 10 rebound double-double on the Pacers for 48 fantasy points. The Pacers frontcourt is banged up right now too, so he should have a soft matchup in a high scoring game.

Note: I’m fading that Warriors/Kings game. It’s an 18 point spread, the Kings beat the Warriors last time, the Warriors got blown out by the Nuggets in their last game and this is their first game back home. Throw in the fact that the Kings just played last night -- Cousins played a bunch of minutes and Collison played 40 again.

Vegas: Cavs -6, O/U: 219

Pacers: 13th Pace, 14th Scoring, 10th most points allowed

Cavs: 13th Pace, 3rd Scoring, 13th Most points allowed

Kyrie Irving - Kyrie is going to have to keep scoring for the next month or so with Love out. He gets a solid matchup here against a team point guards have done well against. I like both sides of this point guard match up for fantasy value.

Jeff Teague - Teague is cheaper and has the same upside as Kyrie. Kyrie is a putrid defender, so the matchup is even softer too. I love Teague here and think he has another big game.

LeBron James - LeBron is more of a cash game guy for me. That 50 point+ floor is safe and will be even safer with his usage bump and love out.

Toronto Raptors @ Chicago Bulls

Vegas: Raptors -7, O/U: 205

Bulls: 23rd Pace, 23rd Scoring, 7th fewest points allowed

Raptors: 22nd Pace, 5th Scoring, 11th fewest points allowed

This game is so hard to handicap with all the Bulls listed as doubtful. Jimmy Butler, Dwyane Wade, Nikola Mirotic, and Paul Zipser are all more likely to miss this game than play in it. Depending on who is in and who is out, we could have some value open up. Last game Michael Carter-Williams played big minutes and produced a nice stat line. He is probably at the apex of the price point I would pay. If Wade or Butler plays I am off of him, but I am willing to roll him if all those guys sit out again. The rest of this team is filled with guys who I expect 20-25 fantasy points out of, even with the injuries. Guys like bobby Portis, Doug McDermott, and Rajon Rondo fall into this category. The two guys who could go for more fantasy points are Robin Lopez and Taj Gibson. They are also about $1000 or more above the last group discussed. On DraftKings I do not like taking this Bulls value as much as I am willing to roll some of them out on FanDuel as salary savers on a Boogie Cousins roster.

DeMar DeRozan - Andrew Wiggins just lit up this wing defense with Wade/Butler sidelined. DeRozan is a scorer just like Wiggins is, so I can see him having a big game too. This defense is much weaker without the starters, so do not waste time fretting over the DvP.

Philadelphia 76ers @ Charlotte Hornets

Vegas: Hornets -8, O/U: 211

Hornets: 16th Pace, 17th Scoring, 9th fewest points allowed

76ers: 8th Pace, 26th Scoring, 9th most points allowed

Kemba Walker - This is an excellent matchup for point guards and Kemba’s price seems a tad low. He is down to $7600 with Batum now more expensive at $7900. Kemba’s scoring is down, but the stats are not much changed. He is still playing 35ish minutes a night and still taking just under 20 shots. He is shooting horribly as his last five game totals are somewhere around 30%. That will change and a home game with the 76ers is likely to help.

Marvin Williams and Frank Kaminsky - The 76ers interior defense is suspect, so that makes this a great spot for guys going against them. Throw in the fact Cody Zeller is doubtful and we could see big minutes from both of these guys at reasonable price tags in a good spot.

San Antonio Spurs @ New York Knicks

Vegas: Spurs -8.5, O/U: 213

Knicks: 12th Pace, 12th Scoring, 6th most points allowed

Spurs: 25th Pace, 10th Scoring, 2nd fewest points allowed

Kawhi Leonard - This is an excellent spot for Leonard against a bad defense that allows a lot of points in an up-tempo spot. Kawhi normally does not smash through his ceiling and his price is elevated, so I prefer to use him in cash.

LaMarcus Aldridge - Aldridge is a sneaky upside play because the price is depressed on him. If he puts up 40, he is well over 6X. He is erratic, so I do not use him in cash, but there is upside potential for tournaments.

Dewayne Dedmon - The big boy has been seeing around 30 minutes and producing big numbers. The Knicks’ interior defense is weak with or without Noah, so I like Dedmon at his price point for safety and potential upside.
