 Jefe's NBA Rundown - 2/4
Posted by Jeff Collins on Saturday, February 4, 2017 - 17:44

As always, the rundown is designed to give you an opinion on some different players or situations in the slate today. You need to be reacting to news throughout the day. Always keep an eye on Twitter for the most up-to-date information. The idea is not that you use ONLY players from this article to build your lineups, but rather all of our content from Benny’s article, to our cheat sheets and videos along with our projections algorithm and optimizer. If you’re trying to only use players under the “cash” section to build your cash lineups for instance, you’re going to have a hard time. Instead, use some of those players as building blocks and fill in around them...

 Thad Houston's DFS Plays - 2/4
Posted by Thad Houston on Saturday, February 4, 2017 - 15:11

What's up y'all? Tonight, we have a huge 10 game slate in the NBA. After the Jimmy Butler debacle from last night, I'm more than ready to cleanse my palate. Considering the number of fantasy options available, I'll try to keep it simple. I'll stay away from some of the more obvious plays and try to stick to the meat and potatoes of the slate...

Vegas: N/A

Raptors: 20th Pace, 5th Scoring, 12th fewest points allowed

Magic: 19th Pace, 28th Scoring, 14th most points allowed

There is no early Vegas line here, because DeMar DeRozan is still listed as questionable. I would not use him if he plays and it would tick down everyone we talk about here. The only guy I would still have interest in is Kyle Lowry, who should keep on carrying this team with DeRozan not 100%, even if he does play.

Kyle Lowry - No matter what, I think Lowry is a solid play. The guy has really stepped up his game with DD out. He has a floor of 46 DK points in his last five and was in the mid 50s on three separate occasions. He is very talented and has upside. Without DeRozan, he gets a big bump up and would be a top option.

Jonas Valanciunas - Orlando does struggle with big men and JV is playing well. He was in foul trouble and absolutely sucked on Wednesday night. That should keep ownership low. The $5400 price point is friendly and he is a guy I like in tournaments tonight.

Los Angeles Lakers @ Washington Wizards

Vegas: Wizards -11, O/U: 218

Wizards: 16th Pace, 10th Scoring, middle of the pack points allowed

Lakers: 7th Pace, 19th Scoring, 4th Most points allowed

John Wall - Wall is a guy I found myself paying up for a lot on the first rosters I built. The Lakers have Russell back and he is one of the worst at stopping opposing point men. The Lakers play fast and suck on defense, so this is an ideal spot for Wall.

Notes: I think you can start any of these guys today. Bradley Beal is scoring-dependent and the price is up, so he is not great. Marcin Gortat always makes sense, due to the high minutes load. Markieff Morris is playing really well and is probably my favorite play on this team. Otto Porter is probably my least favorite, but he is in play too. He has more volatility than the rest of these guys, but he has flashed a huge ceiling. The key is whether or not the game stays close. If it does, all of these guys are going to reach value.

Minnesota Timberwolves @ Cleveland Cavaliers

Vegas: Cavs -7, O/U: 213

Timberwolves: 24th Pace, 18th Scoring, 13th fewest points allowed

Cavs: 14th Pace, 4th Scoring, middle of the pack for points allowed

Channing Frye - My favorite play from the Cavs is actually Channing Frye when you factor in the price. He is seeing big minutes with Kevin Love out and is still dirt-cheap. It says a lot about the current situation that a bench guy getting extra run is the best play I can recommend for the defending champs.

Notes: Kyrie Irving and LeBron James are expensive and right now neither is doing enough to warrant paying up for them. I know they are favored here, but they have looked horrible lately, especially with Love out. I think this team has some serious issues and they are not going to beat Golden State with the group they run out there nightly.

Karl Anthony-Towns - The big KAT has ascended into superstar status. He is priced up with the top studs in the game and it is justified by his recent play. He has 54+ fantasy points in 8 of his last 11 games. That puts him in company with guys like LeBron, Giannis, Durant, and the white-hot Isaiah Thomas. This is not the softest matchup, but the not the toughest either and he has a high usage rate.

Ricky Rubio - As good as Kyrie is on the offensive end, he sucks on the defensive end. Yogi Ferrell lit him up for a huge game last time out and other PGs have victimized him too. Rubio is a stat sheet stuffer who fills it up across the board. This is a solid spot for him.

Point Guard

Cash: Jennings, Nelson (FD), Clarkson

GPP: Jennings, Nelson (FD), Clarkson, Holiday, Wall

Notes: Derrick Rose has already been ruled out with an ankle injury, so Jennings will be one of the more popular plays of the slate. Via StatMuse, we see he gets a major boost averaging 28.8 FD points per game without Rose in the lineup. The Nuggets have a lot of injury decisions up in the air, but especially if Mudiay can’t go we can look to Jameer Nelson on FanDuel. He’s probably a little too expensive on DraftKings, so it might be best to go a different direction there. Even though it looks like D’Angelo Russell will play tonight, I don’t mind taking a shot on a guy like Jordan Clarkson at his price. Guards against Denver have done well all year, and Clarkson should still play 30 minutes tonight. Overall the position is a good one to look for value at, but if you want to spend up I don’t mind going to Jrue Holiday and John Wall. They are better options for tourneys than cash games though since it would be hard to reach the same point per dollar multiples as the other guys mentioned.

New York Knicks @ Washington Wizards

Vegas: Wizards -8, O/U: 216

Wizards: 15th Pace, 10th Scoring, middle of the pack points allowed

Knicks: 13th Pace, 12th Scoring, 6th most point allowed

Two quick notes about the Knicks before we start breaking it down. The first is that Derrick Rose is out for this game, so we will have a shift in usage and minutes for a few players. The second is that the last game was a 3 OT thriller, so take the production with a grain of salt. We are not going to get 50 minutes of action out of some of these guys today like they did last game, so be careful if you are game log watching.

Carmelo Anthony - Without Derrick Rose and with Porzingis still not back to his old self, this is going to be a game where Carmelo Anthony has to carry the load. He has a soft matchup against suspect Otto Porter defense in a high total game. He should be able to put up a nice score. At the very least we can consider him a candidate to take a lot of shots and that could mean huge upside if his shot is dropping.
