Golfer Review

For this section, I’ll list my favorite players at different price points to consider for tournaments (GPP’s).

>$11,000

  • Justin Thomas ($11,400 DK / $12,000 FD): 30% exposure – Rinse and repeat with JT this week, and every week going forward. He’s strong in all facets and I’m sure another $10MM is enough of a motivator to keep the foot on the pedal. If he wins the FedEx Cup again, he’d be the first to win it back to back and second to win two.

Made in Denmark Preview - 8/28
Posted by Taras Pitra on Tuesday, August 28, 2018 - 14:00

After years of play at Himmerland Golf Club, the Made In Denmark moves to a new location this year and will be played at Silkeborg Ry Golfklub in, yep, you guessed it – Denmark. The winners listed below are irrelevant to this week since this is the first time the event has been held here, so don’t put too much stock in former winners. One item of note is this new course is the home course for Ryder Cup Captain Thomas Bjorn, and as luck would have it, it’s the last week before he has to make his captain’s picks for the team. The course is a tree-lined forestlands course with undulating doglegging fairways, and hazards – both dry and wet. The four Par 5’s will make even the shortest of hitters lick their chops off the tee as they all come in under 600 yards (540, 558, 538 & 553). We should see a ton of scoring this week, I think, which makes me want to throw a bit more money at EURO golf than I normally do. The weather looks fine as of writing as expected temps are in the 60’s and 70’s and only a small chance of rain, but nothing to concern us too much.

 Dell Technologies Preview - 8/28
Posted by Taras Pitra on Tuesday, August 28, 2018 - 13:49

Week 2 of the FedEx Cup playoffs is here as we travel northeast to TPC Boston. The course is fairly tough as it ranked 28th out of 50 courses last year, but looking at the scores from the last five years leads me to believe these guys won’t have any issues with it. Three par 5’s this week means we should see some good looks at birdies, and possibly eagles (especially on the 18th hole which ranked the easiest of all 18 holes last year and yielded 17 eagles over four rounds). There were actually five eagles on the 17th hole as well last year, which is a high risk, high reward par 4.

  • Justin Thomas ($11,200 DK/$11,800 FD): 30% exposure – JT just gets it done week in and week out, especially when he’s in form. He won the Dell Technologies last year, beating out his good friend (who he’s better than) and I think we see some more wins out of JT before Jordan gets his next. His OTT + APP + Putting is a deadly combination to have which is exactly why he’s a core play this week.

OVERVIEW

With four years of play at the Albatross Resort I think we finally have enough data to help us make our decisions this week. The course is long-ish, but accuracy off the tee seems relevant, and the ability to hit it in the fairway a long way always helps.

The NORTHERN TRUST (aka The Barclays) heads back to Ridgewood CC this year to kick off the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Ridgewood hosted this event in 2014, 2010 and 2008 producing winners out of Hunter Mahan (what?), Matt Kuchar & Vijay Singh.

>$11,000

  • Webb Simpson ($11,600 DK / $12,200 FD): 15% exposure – He ranks #1 in our model this week and with good reason as he’s got the lowest cumulative score on this course over the last 5 years at -56. Bill Haas comes in second at -47... That’s a big gap and even though I can’t imagine paying DJ-like prices for Webb Simpson, especially when he’s the highest expected owned player in the field, I think we need to have a few pieces.

 Nordea Masters Preview

This year marks the second straight year where the Nordea Masters is held after the PGA Championship and it should be interesting to see where this event lands next year with the change in dates for the PGA. This year we get a new course after Bareseback hosted the last edition of this event making a champion out of Paratore.

 Wyndham Championship Preview

The final week of the regular season is upon us this week as we head to Greensboro, North Carolina. The last three to four weeks have been a tough stretch of golf for most of the Tour’s elite, so we won’t be getting great prices on some of the value plays we’re used to this week.

$10,900-$9,000

  • Justin Thomas ($9,700 DK / $11,400 FD):40% exposure –Tiger is the only player to win back-to-back PGA Championships, and he did it twice. So, the odds are against JT, but JT is still too cheap to pass on this week. As of writing, he’s tied for the lead in Akron, and his game looks a helluva lot better than it did in Scotland so I can’t rule him out as a contender this week. His skill set suits the course fit and he’s a strong scorer that’s underpriced. Feel free to be part of the 70% that faded him at $900 cheaper than last week if you want, but I won’t be.
