NYI @ WSH

Moneyline: WSH -235

Total: Over 5 -116

NYI Starter: Jaroslav Halak, $6,900

WSH Starter: Braden Holtby, $8,500

The Islanders are coming off a back-to-back where they get to face two of the best teams in the league. Fun! They beat Pittsburgh last night and have now won two straight. Do we really expect them to win three in a row, on their fourth night, against the Caps? We shouldn’t.

Moneyline: PIT -155 Total: Under 5.5 -117 PIT Starter: Matt Murray, $8,400 NYI Starter: Thomas Greiss, $7,000 Pittsburgh will likely be a super popular play tonight, and I’d bet that there’s a lot of action on the Crosby and Malkin lines, but today feels like a night for the HBK line. They’ve yet to catch the magic that they had during the playoffs, but they’re facing an Islanders team with very little forward depth to match up. This is a great spot for them to do some damage. I do like Kris Letang too, as he only has one point in his last five, which is just so un-Letang-like that I can’t imagine it continuing.

I can’t think of anything about this game that I particularly like. Carolina has some scoring issues, but Henrik Lundqvist is way too pricey to play in net in a large slate (you’ll notice I tend to like the cheaper options in net). On the flip side, the Rangers offense has been prolific, but they can’t keep scoring on one of every seven shots forever. And while Cam Ward has a bad reputation, he’s been solid this year. I’d avoid this game...

I’m using some NHL advanced stats (just like we do for baseball), so here’s a little cheat sheet of what they mean:

QS%: Just like a pitcher deliver a quality start, so do goalies. It’s when the goalie achieves at least the mean save percentage (for the season) in a game.

GSAA: Goals Saved Above Average. You take the league average save percentage and apply it to the amount of shots a particular goalie has faced. You get a number of goals that the average goalie in the league would have surrendered, if they faced the same number of shots as the goaltender in question. That number gets compared to the number of goals surrendered by that goaltender, and a plus/minus is created.

CGY @ NYI

Moneyline: NYI -143

Total: Over 5 -126

CGY Starter: Brian Elliott, $7,500

NYI Starter: Thomas Greiss, $7,700

On a day with just two NHL games on tap, it’s a shame that one of them is this one. The Flames and Islanders have to be two of the most disappointing teams this season and surely this game will be just as disappointing to watch. On a night with more games that might mean this game gets neglected by the public, but that’s obviously not the case tonight.
