 Daily Puck Drop - 10/18

Another busy day in the NHL with twelve games on the slate but I think I’ve narrowed it down to a handful of teams and players that should be on your radar when setting your GPP lineup (in no particular order). I’ll be attending the Oilers and Hurricanes game tonight so I’ll be out of touch with how this turns out until the final whistle has blown at Roger’s Place here in Edmonton. This will be the last Daily Puck Drop until Thursday...

So today we have a 4-game slate on our hands. Just like yesterday, all the games on today’s slate also have a game-total of 5 ½. We can once expect see some high scoring games, so get your popcorn ready. So without further ado, let’s skate into my top goalies, stacks, cheat sheet and bold predictions of the night!

I’m using some NHL advanced stats (just like we do for baseball), so here’s a little cheat sheet of what they mean. Don’t want to lose you:

QS%: Just like a pitcher deliver a quality start, so do goalies. It’s when the goalie achieves at least the mean save percentage (for the season) in a game.

GSAA: Goals Saved Above Average. You take the leagues average save percentage and apply it to the amount of shots a particular goalie has faced. You get a number of goals that the average goalie in the league would have surrendered, if they faced the same number of shots as the goaltender in question. That number gets compared to the number of goals surrendered by that goaltender, and a plus/minus is created.

Also, be sure to check out NHL Analyst Nick Rodriguez’ "PM Powerplay," released daily in the late afternoon. Hot streaks in sports are very attractive and sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in the moment. Auston Matthews scoring four goals in his first NHL game was spectacular but I’d like to think most fantasy hockey players would lean against him having that type of performance in the next game. Now, I’m not saying he’s not a good player or that he won’t score a lot of goals this year, but it’s a streaky sport and sometimes the bounces go your way and sometimes they don’t. This matters when building your Draft Kings lineup because often times people can’t turn their back on the hot player, while having a “what have you done for me lately?” attitude towards players who are running a bit cold. With that in mind, let’s examine the games and look at a few players who have been all around the net but have yet to score their first goal.

The first Saturday of the NHL season was lit. Personally, it was a successful night for me but it could’ve went a lot better; the swings in NHL are a part of the game. It’s important to recognize and acknowledge when luck is on your side. You need luck in hockey to have success so you might as well embrace it...
