MLB DG: Expected Batting Average
Batting average sucks. No matter how much we learn about the game, how far we push the metrics, how much our knowledge grows, we just can’t move on from batting average, something our grandfather passed down to our fathers who passed it on to us, we just can’t kick the habit. I can remember sitting at baseball games with my father as a five-year-old at Candlestick Park talking about homers, runs batted in and batting average. You too?
Since we can’t get rid of batting average, let’s try to understand it a bit more, shall we? We can talk line drive rates, BABIP, hard hit ball rates, all that stuff. We can also talk about a newish way to understand what we’re seeing on the field when it comes to batting average, and that is Expected Batting Average.
