 Thad's WNBA DFS Breakdown - 5/25

Before digging into today’s slate, I just wanted to reiterate the importance of patience. Each WNBA team has a mixture of talented rookies taking their game to the next level, players returning from a year-long absence, players trying to mesh with new teammates via trade or free agency and players away from the team participating in EuroLeague basketball (The fact they only played three preseason games doesn’t help). It takes a while for these ladies to settle in, so you need to be patient while they do so. Things get a lot more interesting as the season progresses so don’t risk too much of your hard-earned bankroll while things get sorted out. This is one reason why the optimizer isn’t ready yet. Without having an idea of a player's expected minutes per game, you would have ended up with a bunch of useless lineups, all of which listing Jonquel Jones (CON) as a strong value. I learned this lesson the hard way last season and I don’t want history to repeat itself. We’re working on setting things up and should have it running smoothly very soon. In the meantime, I appreciate your patience. Now, on to today’s slate...

What’s up y’all? The WNBA season has officially kicked off and I’m glad to say that it is a “thing.” Before digging into today’s slate, I just wanted to reiterate the importance of patience. This is my same “soapbox statement” from yesterday so feel free to skip it if you like. Each WNBA team has a mixture of talented rookies taking their game to the next level, players returning from a year-long absence, players trying to mesh with new teammates via trade or free agency and players away from the team participating in EuroLeague basketball.  Welcome to 2018 WNBA!
Posted by Thad Houston on Friday, May 18, 2018 - 17:20

What’s up y’all? This year’s WNBA season is finally upon us! How many of you are excited? (sound of crickets chirping) Okay, you may not be excited right now, but you will be once the season is in full swing. Those of you who follow the WNBA can confirm that the league is far from boring.

If this is your first time trying WNBA DFS, you will find out that the learning curve is rather steep. While it’s very similar to NBA DFS, WNBA DFS is also unique in many ways. It’s the definition of of “same-same but different”. The same important statistics that are used in NBA DFS will be applied to WNBA DFS (i.e., minutes, pace, offensive rating, defensive rating, etc.), however, positional scarcity and small slate sizes will force you to be a bit more creative. Unlike NBA DFS, WNBA DFS has players that start the season late due to overseas commitments, players leaving in the middle of the season to play overseas, players on maternity leave, returning players that sat out last season and, of course, the always unpredictable WNBA trade deadline.

Washington Mystics

  • Pace: 77.9 (ranked #9 of 12)
  • Offensive Rating: 104.1 (ranked #5 of 12)
  • Defensive Rating: 102.6 (ranked #6 of 12)
  • Vegas: MIN -10.5, over/under 163.5

GUARDS:

Kristi Toliver @ $5.9K on FD/$7.6K on DK (29.2 minutes per game – 19.3 fantasy points per game – 18.0% usage rate): Like most guards, Toliver ran into a brick wall when she faced Minnesota (14.2 fantasy points in 23 minutes). She managed to come up with 22.7 fantasy points against them earlier this month (in 24 minutes), but that was at the end of the regular season. I expect the Lynx to keep their foot on the pedal throughout the remainder of the playoffs. That makes any Washington Mystics player a tournament option, by default.
